Electric Waste Trucks are Heading to The City

The City of London is one of the biggest business and financial hubs in the world, with a vast array of legal, accounting and consultancy brands and more than 500,000 people travelling in and out each day for work and 18.4 million visitors every year. But it’s soon to have another accolade to its name – playing host to the first fully-electric rubbish removal fleet. The switch to an eco-friendlier waste removal system is the perfect solution to the problem of our country’s requirement for more environmentally-friendly solutions, particularly to the city’s junk removal needs. And Veolia has just signed on to help the City achieve its goals, with pioneering new technology in waste collection services.

Numerous Benefits for the City

The Square Mile’s business performance manager, Vince Dignam, had stated previously that this could be the start of bigger things to come in the world of rubbish removal. But what are the benefits of going fully electric? One of the reasons for making the change is that the air quality in London is renowned for being highly polluted and of poor quality, because of the huge amounts of traffic and public transport that passes through the capital each day. The technology is also more convenient for staff, with notifications sent from the solar auto-compacting BigBelly bins which alter crew members when the bins are full so they can collect more waste.

An Extensive Management Portfolio

Veolia’s new portfolio includes a wide variety of services to manage the cleansing tasks for the Square Mile. From street cleaning and recycling collections to commercial and domestic waste, vehicles maintenance and special event preparation, the firm will ensure that all aspects of the City’s rubbish removal needs are taken care of in a more environmentally-friendly fashion. Plus, all of the vehicles in the fleet will be digitally tracked so that they can be monitored depending on the geographical location and their capacity to collect more waste. Veolia has beat competitors to the contract to manage the City’s 63km of public roads and 15km of footpaths, as well as dealing with everything from fountains to sign-posts and street lights.

A Sustainable Solution to a Daily Problem

London’s residents and businesses have high standards when it comes to the area in which they live and work, which the council hopes will be more than met by the pioneering technology. The trucks will play a key role in helping to reduce the pollution in London and to improve local air quality, as well as streamlining waste removal processes to enhance the lives of those working and living in the City. The sustainable solution that Veolia will provide puts London one step closer to delivering an innovative system that is kinder to the planet and benefits the community as well. Veolia plans to have the much-anticipated electric fleet in operation and fully mobilised within their first year of the contract, after which the City will begin to see the benefits of its sustainable alternative to diesel.
