Through innovative educational programs on the business of medicine, leadership and diversity, Dr. Mason’s personal mission is to teach, facilitate and empower future and current physicians to reach their maximum potential as comprehensively-prepared medical professionals. The past 20 years as a clinician and educator have enabled her to develop expertise in medical education program innovation and implementation from the physician’s perspective.
As an alumnus of the Kellogg School of Management, Dr. Mason knows that it is more important than ever to ensure that physicians are comprehensively prepared to lead and manage healthcare teams in the face of delivery and payment system reform. Thus, Dr. Mason’s experience as a practicing, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and physician administrator of a private practice led her to develop a comprehensive business of medicine and practice management curriculum for physicians, www.BeyondtheExamRoom.com®. Initially, introduced in 2011, BeyondtheExamRoom.com® has registered over 3,000 physician and resident users in over 30 US institutions. Dr. Mason delivers this curriculum to future and practicing physicians nationwide with the support of experienced physician- and expert-faculty.
Forced into early retirement from surgical practice due to rheumatoid arthritis, Dr. Mason rallied turning a perceived roadblock into an opportunity to effect and create change throughout the next phase of her professional career. Now with expertise in physician workforce development and mentoring, Dr. Mason has focused her post-surgical career on educational efforts in diversity and physician leadership. In 2015, she was recognized nationally as the 2015 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Diversity Award recipient for her work through Nth Dimensions, an educational non-profit which Dr. Mason founded in 2004.
Through Nth Dimensions, Dr. Mason has coordinated a team of over 40 orthopaedic surgeons from 30 institutions and private practices to educate over 3000 medical students about musculoskeletal medicine, healthcare disparities and orthopaedic surgery as a career option. Through Nth Dimensions Pipeline Initiatives, over 100 women and underrepresented minorities have been matched in orthopaedic residency programs as Nth Dimensions Scholars.
Dr. Mason holds faculty appointments as adjunct associate professor of GME at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and as clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Texas, Medical Branch in Galveston. Dr. Mason’s additional endeavors include committee and board positions with various AAOS groups, such as the Leadership Fellows Committee, the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, and mentoring chair for the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society. Dr. Mason is also a proud wife and a mother of two future leaders.
