Learning on the Job: How to Create a Rewarding Staff Development Program

The success of your business relies largely on the people you employ. And because you’ll depend on your workforce, it’s crucial you have a plan in place that will allow your employees to grow and evolve over time.

Putting a staff development program in place will allow you to develop your employee education, harnessing and improving their skills, which, in turn, will help skyrocket your business toward success.

Having a clear plan in place will demonstrate to your employees what opportunities are available to them, and how you’re going to help them advance their skills and careers. By providing your staff with more skills, they’ll be better equipped to help you as your business expands – creating a win-win situation.

However, a staff development strategy shouldn’t be created on a whim. Instead, it needs careful planning and consideration to put it into place.

Establish Your Business Goals

Firstly, you need to consider what your business needs are so you can align these with your employees’ objectives. Otherwise, if you don’t do this, all your efforts may go to waste.

Start by establishing what your company’s short- and long-term objectives are, before identifying what competencies, knowledge, and skills will support these. For example, if your business is rapidly expanding, you may require more leaders. What skills are they going to need? Are any of your current employees capable of developing these leadership skills?

If this is the case, this will allow you to overcome the gap between your current and future requirements. Developing candidates within your business will help reduce the time and money you spend on recruiting, interviewing and training newcomers.

Speak to Your Employees

Secondly, it would be wrong to assume that you know what career aspirations and skill levels your employees have. Therefore, it’s beneficial if you can have a one-to-one with each of your team members to find out what their aspirations are and how they feel they’ll be able to accomplish these.

Try to discuss any challenges they’re facing in their current role, asking them what areas they’re struggling with and whether they’d benefit from additional mentoring or training.

Some of your employees may know where they’re heading but others may not. If you can talk to them, you can work together to establish what their role is and how this is included within the overall business plan.

Figure Out What Skills Your Staff Members Need

Now you’ve got a clear idea of what your company’s and employee’s’ needs are, it’s time to work out exactly what skill sets each team member needs.

When putting this together make sure you create timely and specific goals because it’s much harder to measure how an employee is progressing if their goals are broad or vague.

Put Together an Action Plan

How are your employees going to achieve their objectives?

A staff development program can include a wide range of activities, including working with other experts, mentoring and coaching, reading training material or taking part in a formal lecture/training program.

Once you’ve figured out how you’re going to provide your staff with these unique learning opportunities, you need to formulate a plan.

Consider how you’re going to put this plan into action – taking note of any planning that needs doing, who’s going to be involved, whether employees need to take time off work and whether you’ll need to get additional cover while they’re training.

You might also find it helpful to create a timetable or schedule so each of your employees knows how they’re continuing forward toward their goals.

Putting New Skills to the Test

Now you’ve invested a lot of time and money into your employees, it’s time to reap the benefits. To get the most out of this new training scheme you’re going to need to make sure your employees are able to put their new skills to work.

Create new opportunities for your employees so they can quickly start to use these skills in their role, providing feedback at all times. This will help them develop and refine these new skills because if you don’t put their new knowledge to practice while it’s fresh, they’re likely to forget it over time.

By putting a staff development program in place at your company, it not only makes sure your staff are knowledgeable and effective, but it also helps you improve employee satisfaction. And when your workforce is happy, they’re more likely to stay with your company and produce work to a high standard.
