Construction project scheduling should be realistic, not optimistic

Michael Pink, the CEO of SmartPM Technologies, the premier platform for analysis of construction-schedule data joins Enterprise Radio.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Michael Pink discuss the following:

  1. Scheduling is important in every industry, but none more so than the construction industry. Please explain why that is the case.
  2. Why are so many construction schedules poorly constructed?
  3. How does your product work, and how does it help construction companies stay on budget and on time?
  4. One of the ramifications of poorly developed schedules is the potential for litigation. How does your product help avoid that, and what purpose does it serve if litigation is actually initiated?
  5. Your product teaches users an important lesson – that construction schedules need to be develop based on reality, not hope. Do you think this lesson can apply to companies in any industry that has to create any kind of schedule?

SUMMARY: Over the years, the construction industry has been plagued with scheduling issues. Too many schedules are created that are unrealistic in terms of project completion, milestones, and workflow. Through a sophisticated analysis process, SmartPM can help identify the areas that have the most potential for delays, overruns and, ultimately, litigation. But more than that, the product clearly highlights the need to create better schedules upfront using data that is more accurate and up-to-date. This is a lesson that can be translated to almost any industry: that schedules need to be created based on reality, not hope. It does no good to develop a schedule for any type of project or job that may please the folks in the executive suite but ultimately is unachievable. When it comes to schedules, it’s better to be honest than optimistic.
