CHIRP, a volunteer-driven, community radio station

Shawn Campbell, the Founder and General Manager of CHIRP Radio, a non-commercial, volunteer driven community radio station committed to Chicago’s independent music, arts and cultural scenes joins Enterprise Radio.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Shawn Campbell discuss the following:

  1. What did you feel was missing from the Chicago music scene that led you to found CHIRP?
  2. Radio was a typically male-dominated industry. Your organization is female led and many of its volunteers are women. Was this intentional or were women just naturally drawn to the organization?  If intentional,  how did you recruit women?
  3. How does this affect the culture of an organization, compared with your previous jobs? Does it change your leadership style?
  4. Is managing a “staff” of volunteers different from paid employees, and if so, how?
  5. Millennials are not known for their connection with broadcast radio, but you have many Millennial volunteers. What do you think draws them to a station like CHIRP?”
