Derek Tian received his undergraduate degree from the Stern School of Business at NYU where he studied theories on Finance and Marketing.  After leaving the academic world, he put his knowledge to practice in the world of Commercial Real Estate lending in New York City where he rose to the position of Vice President at MidFirst Bank.

Seeking personal growth along with broader and deeper challenges, Derek co-founded Black Lapel to help the modern man dress better with an easy to use e-commerce solution for custom sized and custom designed clothing.  Derek directs Black Lapel’s marketing, PR and social media efforts and also helps manage the company’s operations in both its New York headquarters and Shanghai, China.

Since launching its website in 2012, Black Lapel has helped thousands of men make the upgrade to custom clothing.  The company’s style journal, The Compass, has a loyal following of over 100,000 readers who tune in weekly for style tips and tutorials.  The Compass helps readers develop their own style so they can expertly design and utilize Black Lapel’s constantly expanding offerings of custom suits, shirts and menswear accessories.
