In Fantasy football, participants play the role of general managers by assembling an imaginary team of real-life footballers. The score points of these virtual players are based on actual statistical performance or perceived contribution to the field of play on a real-life game. The fantasy team’s manager has to compile the points and total them according to the roster selected. In fantasy football, the managers draft, trade and drop players, analogously to real sports. These games involve college football, National Football League, and the Canadian Football League.

Date it was Founded

Bernie Donnelly created fantasy football on 14th august 1971 in England. Due to exposure via the internet, fantasy evolved over the years from a simple recreational activity to a significant business earning millions of revenues.

In the US, 20 million people play fantasy football each season so the odds are quite good for you winning.

In the US, the major commercial companies controlling fantasy football are DraftKings and FanDuel.

Traditional Fantasy Football

In this kind, the competitions are conducted over a long period, usually a whole season or even several seasons depending on the keeper league.

Types of League

Head to Head Leagues

In this league, the team matches up against a different fantasy team from the league each week. For a team to win, it must receive most points of the two that week. These points are dictated by a scoring controller, which is either customized by the league or standard set. The team which has recorded the best win-loss is given a chance to proceed to the playoff. In some cases, both sides might have recorded the same win-loss, tiebreakers are applied according to league preference.

Total Points Leagues

The teams accumulate points on an ongoing season. To determine the league standing, the teams’ total scores are studied.

Keeper Style League

This type allows the teams to keep several players from one year to the next and, in some cases assigning them contracts. For the first season of keeper’s league, the draft is recorded in the same way as any other standard league draft is performed. The roster in keeper league limits you to a certain number each offseason. Keeper league can have as few as one or even as high as even 16.

Dynasty Leagues

In this league, you are allowed to keep the entire roster from one year to the next, but you can replenish the list through rookie drafts. In other words, dynasty leagues are the enhanced versions of a keeper league. During offseason, your roster limit remains unchanged, but it can increase temporarily with the addition of rookies.

Teams

In most leagues, mostly those run by the national newspaper, a participant will select 11 players within a given price budget. Each team is restricted on the number of players and, for instance, one goalkeeper, four defenders, 3 or 4 midfielders, and 2 or 3 forwards. In other teams, the games are squared base, meaning participants choose not only the first eleven players but also a set of substitutes.

In smaller leagues, mostly played by few peoples, the buying of players is by bidding between rival managers rather than for a given amount of money. It implies that a particular player can only play for one team, and also the points accumulated are accredited to that team only.

For most leagues, teams are offered a chance to transfer players in and out of the team as the season progresses in case of an injury or loss of form.

Point Scoring

Oulala Fantasy Football applies a sophisticated scoring board. This scoring system has 70 different points scoring criteria, including a matrix of any action a player can perform during the game. Detailed actions include shots on/off-targets, successful dribbles, corners won and provoking an offside. Unfortunately, Oulala ceased to exist in 2018.

Most fantasy football games had to change their scoring system and put more emphasis on real player performance rather than goal assists.
