Wireless Media with Point to Point Technology

In this blog we will deal with the wireless media and point to point wireless technology involved behind wireless media. To begin with lets first of all discuss about the properties of a wireless media.

Electromagnetic signals are carried in case of wireless media which represents the binary digits involved in data communication that uses radio or microwave frequencies.

Since it is a medium of networking it is not restricted to conductors and pathways unlike copper and fibre media. Here in radio point to point wireless devices you will obtain a greater mobility options compared to all other mode of communication. For this reason the number of wireless radio point to point devices are increasing day by day. For home networks also point to point wireless devices has became a popular choice. In enterprise networks due to increase in network bandwidth option point to point wireless is gaining popularity.

Some of the areas of concern that you have to keep in mind while using point to point wireless

  • For point to point wireless devices open environment is much required. The obstructions limits the coverage of the point to point wireless devices. These obstructions can be any building or building like structures or any local terrain.
  • Point to point wireless can be interrupted as it is susceptible to interference. These interference can be caused by the use of either cordless telephones, fluorescent lights, microwave ovens or any other medium of wireless communication.
  • The most important concern is the security. Any person who doesn’t have the access to the network can gain the access to the network. So network security is of much importance while considering point to point wireless devices.

Despite point to point wireless being so much popular, both the copper and fibre are mostly used for desktop connectivity as a physical layer media.

Let’s have a look at different types of point to point wireless standards

In telecommunication industries and IEEE standards both of the data links and physical layers are considered in case of wireless data communications. There are mainly three common standards. They are mentioned below

  • WiFi or Wireless local area network (WLAN) uses CSMA/CA media for the access process. CSMA/CA is abbreviated as contention or non-deterministic system with carrier sense multiple access or collision avoidance. This is standard IEEE 802.11
  • WPAN abbreviated as Wireless Personal Area Network or most commonly known as Bluetooth uses pairing of devices placed between a distance of 100 metres. This is standard IEEE 802.15
  • The next standard is usage of point to multipoint access to provide wireless broadband or WiMAX known as Worldwide interoperability for microwave access. This is standard IEEE 802.16

There are certain other wireless technologies that provides that provides communications between cellular and satellite but we will deal with them in any other blog. Hope you have noted the areas of concern to be kept in mind while using of point to point wireless devices and the telecommunication standards behind point to point wireless.
