Sheet piling is a great material that can be used to retaining walls in canals or at the water’s edge. They are an interlocking system of steel that goes together vertically. It works well in the construction of dams and locks as well.  It can be used to hold back soil for parking structures that are below the surface as well as water.

There are different types of sheet piling. Nucor Skyline produces a U-type, Pan Type, Z Tep, and Flat Web sheets.  They are perfect for providing support during excavations as well.

Sheet Piling is perfect for construction.  And, they are used to help with excavations for anything below the ground surface.  It is used to help keep the walls from falling in on themselves during digging. They do not necessarily have to be used as a permanent structure but can be reused for this purpose.  Or they can be used permanently, depending on the needs of the application.

Installation of Sheet Piling

Sheet piling is installed with large vibrating machines.  However, if the soil is super compact an impact machine maybe need.  But, essentially they are going to be pounded into the ground. Places where vibration may cause other concerns, a hydraulic pump will push them through the ground to the desired level.

If you have ever been around any major waterways you have probably seen some of Nucor Skyline sheet piling and having even realized it.  It typically made of steel and used as retainer walls. Often, it is put in during the excavation process and it lasts for a very long time.  In fact, there are some examples of sheet piling found from before the 1920s that are still used today. It is Earth tight and holds back water due to the nature of the design.  The section interlink which provides a great amount of strength as well.

Nucor Skyline Sheet piling can be used wherever you are trying to keep the water out and the earth where it is meant to be.  Because of its interlocking structure, it is waterproof and works great for building temporary walls just about anywhere.

Sheet piling is easy to transport as it is large sections of steel.  It is excellent in areas where there are Earthquakes as Earthquakes really do not affect this type of structure.  Which makes it a great component for roadways as well as bridge construction and underpasses.

Is Sheet Piling Green?

Yes, Nucor Skyline steel sheets are made with “green” in mind.  These structures can be recycled and are made of recycled components.  Most of them being made with up to 95% recycled steel that would have been scrap metal.

In essence, sheet piling has a large variety of uses.  It can be permanent or a temporary solution to building strong walls or barriers.  It can be build to the length and height needed for your specifications. And, it is easy to produce and install.  And, can easily be installed just about anywhere a wall needs to be built, quickly. The different shapes are used depending on what your needs are and what your Engineer specifies.
