What Do I Need to know Before Building my Own Website?

In order to make any business these days a success, you have to build a website for it. Given that so many business transactions are actually made over the web nowadays, it’s crucial for the growth, development and sustainability of your business that you’re accessible online. Not only this, but being online has made some businesses more successful than their creators ever imagined. With pretty much the entire planet being online, the world is literally your oyster when it comes to meeting clients, building relationships and trading business – all with the click of a button. But what do you actually know prior to building your own website in order for it to be successful?

Know Your Strategy

One of the initial and most important things you should do prior to setting up a web page, is knowing your strategy. You have to know what it is you want to say, what purpose you want to serve, who your target audience is and ultimately how to improve your marketing. The hardest part is starting out, but once you’ve figured out what these things are, you’ll be well on the way.

The whole point of making this website is in order to represent your business and make it more successful. That being said it’s important to have a mission statement, and to straight away know what the core values of the company are. Furthermore, you need to know what it is that sets you apart from other companies in your field and push that. Every single business or web page out there needs to have some sort of unique selling point that makes them stand out from the crowd, otherwise they’ll just end up lost in a sea of other pages already out there.

Know Your Audience

Next, in order to properly market your website, you’ll have to know exactly who it is your target audience are, and what need they have that you’re offering to fill. This is called finding your niche market. In order to find your niche market you need to think about who the average consumer will be, and do some market research in order to find that out. Once you know their age range, location, interests etc you’re a step closer to being able to target your content directly towards the people that matter. Half the battle is finding out who they are.

Think About the Website Design

When you’re thinking about the design of your website, take yourself out of your current position and put yourself in the shoes of one of your consumers for a moment. What would they find appealing in a website?

Generally, easy usage and navigation is one of the top things you should consider before even starting. There’s nothing worse than going onto a website in order to get a service, but it being so hard to use that you’d be better off going elsewhere. If you don’t think about the usage and make it easy, this is exactly what your consumers are likely to do.

Likewise, you also have to make it attractive though. Picking a colour scheme is generally a better idea than picking colours as you go, because it’s not only eye catching but keeps the tone of the page overall more professional. As well as thinking about the colour scheme, ensure that the pictures you use are high quality.

All of this might sound like pretty on the surface stuff, but remember that when scrolling through the internet and such, people are mainly attracted by visuals. As well as this, the more professional the website appears, the more likely consumers are to trust it’s from a well-established company, an they’ll ultimately be a lot more likely to use it. This is before you even think about what content you’re going to post. People will only read on if they like the way something looks, so begin by thinking superficially, and take it from there.

Content

Last, but certainly not least, you need to ensure that you’re posting the right content on your website. Although it has to be presented well in order to draw people in, to keep people coming back the content itself has to be rich and full of detail.

People also like to know that the content they’re reading is reliable, so throw in an authority link or two to allow them to see that what they’re reading is trustworthy. Above all, post the right content for your target audience. Keep them interested, and gain a loyal following.
