The Self Defense Strategies of Political Speakers

The Self Defense Strategies of Political Speakers

with Dr Bill Lampton

Let’s look at what politicians do to defend themselves when their viewpoints and statements incite their opponents and the media.

1. My remarks were taken out of context.

2. Circumstances have changed since I’ve first spoken about this issue.

3. I have matured in my thinking.

4. That’s just what I would have expected my opponents to say.

5. I misspoke.

6. That leads me to say…

7. Oh, I wouldn’t do that at all.

It’s up to you to determine which of these seven defense strategies will work for you. Which ones fit your communication style and your standard of ethics? Even if you choose not to use any of these tactics, being familiar with them will help you identify them when you hear them from others.
