Grant Stahla, Co-owner of Stahla Services, a nationwide provider of restroom, shower, and ADA trailer rentals joins Enterprise Radio.
Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Grant Stahla discuss the following:
(Host Eric Dye) So let’s get right into things and I understand that you serve the Heartland and Rockies region. So how do rental needs differ from today between Kansas City, Omaha and Denver? I’m sure that would be interesting to hear how all that works.
(Guest Grant Stahla) Yeah. Yeah, it’s really fun. We’re able to bring these luxury restroom trailers and shower trailers to all sorts of locations, but Omaha, NE, Kansas City and Denver are three of our favorite ones. Each each area has its own strategy, and in Denver, you know when we’re bringing restroom trailers out to a wedding, a lot of times it’s going to be up in a mountain.
So if you can imagine. A mountain top wedding where they have a venue and maybe it’s at a vineyard. We’re pulling these luxury restroom trailers. Maybe it’s a two-stall restroom trailer or four-stall restroom trailer. We’re going to be pulling it up that mountain, going back and forth and we just need to make sure that it’s gonna be heaters on that so it’s warm enough.
We’ll get that Bluetooth stereo system playing, but then if you imagine doing the same thing in Kansas City. We’re going to a vineyard. You’re dealing with a different area. It’s going to be a similar. You know a similar wedding experience where there might be 200 people, 300 people out in a barn, but it might be a horse barn in a Kansas City or Missouri area. There’s a lot of beautiful rolling hills. And so when we go to acreages, a lot of times we’re going to see, you know, animals and more trees and and set up in more of a grass versus the rocky situation of the Rockies and Omaha pretty similar.
You might be in downtown Omaha at a big downtown building, but each area has its own vibe, has its own culture. But Kansas City, has its own Chiefs vibe, whether you like them or not, and Denver, definitely mountains. And so when we’re bringing a restroom trailer or shower trailer for the job site to these locations, we are making sure that we are able to serve each community uniquely. Yeah.
(Host Eric Dye) You know your stuff. And again, your feedback is interesting on how you’re serving these diverse regions. Now, how can rental businesses adapt to regional demands effectively?
(Guest Grant Stahla) Yeah, that’s really good, we definitely just try to understand what the customer need is. So when each area is going to have its own unique problems, we’re gonna adapt. So in Denver, we’re working with the city and County of Denver to help support the migrant and homeless population. We’re working with the city for when it gets cold out. Right now it’s really cold out. So there’s several buildings that are reserved to support hundreds of homeless and migrant population for when it might be below 10° below 20° out and we’ll have a restroom trailer and a shower trailer that we rent them and and put it right outside the building. It’s heated and it has a sound system going and we have running water so they’re able to take a hot shower when it’s really cold out and get out of the city of Denver’s harsh elements. There’s in the city you’re gonna experience, you know it’s a little bit harder to operate if you don’t have a house. So that’s something where in the city of Denver, we’re able to support those individuals.
In Kansas City we, we’ve supported people for the Union. The Union Station has been shut down for a little while and we’re able to bring restroom trailers there for all the people that are visiting. You know, the shops and the restaurants and just visitors that come by, they don’t have to shut down the whole building to make it so that they have to close down, but we’re able to support it when their bathroom shuts down. We’re able to make it so that whole space can stay open and people can have a good experience. It might be hot and humid as it is sometimes in Kansas City, MO. And we’re able to turn that air conditioning on and same Bluetooth sound system. So people, you know aren’t able to hear the neighbors in the stall next to them, so it’s a nice private experience. But we’re able to kinda turn that HVAC on and it automatically adjusts like your house would depending on the climate.
So and then in Omaha, NE a unique thing is the College World Series. We’re able to support when all the people come over from the nation. And they come to the College World Series and tailgate. It’s in I think it’s late June and we bring about 10 restroom trailers to different tailgates and we’re able to provide a good relief from the crowds in Omaha with lots of restroom trailers out and about in different places to support as people are walking around seeing the different booths going and watching games, seeing their favorite college teams, we’re able to help out in Omaha, NE for restroom trailer rentals. So it’s a lot of fun. Each area has its own has its own different unique characteristics. But we have a blast kind of adapting to each one.
(Host Eric Dye) Really appreciate the details shared so far, so tell me Grant, how do you reach Springfield, Sioux City and Cheyenne from these hubs? Get into that just a little bit.
(Guest Grant Stahla)Â I love it. I love it. Those are smaller towns and areas we love to go to. So that’s what’s really nice about having our mobile restroom trailers and mobile shower trailers. We’re able to hook these onto our pickups. We have one ton pickups and basically it’s called a A2 ton pickup. It’s F550. And we’re able to pull these anywhere you want anywhere in the nation. Really, you know, like I said, some of our hubs are Denver, CO, Omaha, NE, Kansas City, KS, but we’re able to go to places like Cheyenne, WY.
In Springfield, NE and Sioux City, IA, we’re able to go there and support them with maybe if there’s a local event like in Cheyenne, there’s Frontier days and they bring in over 40,000 people for frontier days and they have all these people camping out. So we bring a shower trailer and are able to support people as they’re camping out, maybe in a tent or in a camper, and they don’t have a shower, so they’re able to use the shower trailers during an event with lots and lots of people. And it’s hot and sweaty and you need somewhere to rinse off and feel clean and ready to go out and support the rodeos and all the cowboys at the frontier days. So it’s a lot of fun being able to go mobile.
In Springfield NE, there are data centers, so it’s a hub for data centers, for Facebook and Google. Amazon distribution facilities, other distribution facilities. So we have lots of trailers out at these data centers supporting all of the workers, so that the centers can be built quickly. They can be built when it’s really cold. They don’t have to stop production because it’s so cold they have a heated restroom trailer where they’re able to go in there and have a nice 70° stall when it’s -10° out like it was last week. You’re able to go in and in experience, you know warmth, wash your hands with warm water. Yeah, have a a private stall and then the whole the internal water tank has hot water. It’s a heated stall and it’s able to provide non frozen water for those people that are that are figuring out how to build these these huge multi $1,000,000 facilities that are some of the biggest buildings you’ve ever seen and we’re able to provide restrooms at different points in the construction zone so that it they don’t have to take their side by sides or utvs a mile away. They’re able to, you know, get something that’s maybe within a couple 100 yards of where they’re working.
(Host Eric Dye) Now what’s one tip for scaling a service business across regions? You certainly gotta experience on that.
(Guest Grant Stahla)Â Oh boy, it’s been a long journey. Erin and I, my wife and I have been working on this for over a decade. Scaling something across the nation or across the Midwest is a noble venture. It’s something we don’t have perfectly figured out, but I would say some of the things that help us be successful is having an incredible employee culture having a consistent result. When you go to McDonald’s, when you go to Chick-fil-A, you know what you’re gonna get and one of the reasons that they’ve been so successful as they provide consistent results. It doesn’t necessarily matter whether it’s a mediocre result like in one of the brands case or in another one, you know you get consistently high results so that’s something with Stahla Services. We wanna provide consistent good results. We wanna have good value and a good experience.
So I would recommend that as our tip to scaling across the Midwest, especially if you’re gonna be a restroom trailer rental company or shower trailer rental company like we are I would work on providing consistent results and working that with your employees and to have your own. For us, it’s called the Stahla way. Have your own way where you are able to treat your customers consistently.
