Veronica Bisesti, the Executive Director, Producer, Host of Subculture, Sounds of PDX & Culture Hub PDX, and station Artist Liaison of Portland Radio Project joins the eMusician Podcast Show.

Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Veronica Bisesti discuss the following:

  1. I understand Portland Radio Project is an independent streaming music station – tell us a little bit about the mission?
  2. What has changed in the music industry that makes a station focused on independent musicians so critically needed?
  3. How has the move away from traditional records release impacted musicians?  In short, how do they make a living in today’s music scene?
  4. How can people best support independent music, and what would our world look like if it was all commercial playlist?
  5. Finally, what is your prediction for independent music’s future?

About Veronica Bisesti

As an only child, music was my playmate.  I had a pair of headphones the size of a car and once those were wrapped around my ears, I would get lost in the music and words. Not much has changed…except the size of the headphones.

Although I have an appreciation for all music, my heart is in a mosh pit.   Give me a fuzzy guitar and some delay, and I’m in heaven.

Here’s a little bit more about me and what I do with PRP:

  • Run day to day operations of our unique non-profit community radio station
  • Responsible for oversight of all station products (streaming, broadcast, music curation, specialty shows, podcasts)
  • Produce and host weekly on air show – Subculture – stellar retro-alt plus a whole lot more
  • Produce and host Sounds of PDX (airing select Fridays at 6pm with local artist spotlights and Drop-In Sessions)
  • Produce Stumptown Soundchec,k which is in collaboration with Music Portland. This monthly podcast provides a comprehensive examination of Portland’s music community, addressing the challenges faced by local musicians, venue owners, and other stakeholders. The goal?  To raise awareness of the issues faced by the PDX music community and initiate conversations on a variety of topics including cultural arts plans, economic development and music tourism.
  • Maintain and develop the stations’ Drop-in Session and Video Session platforms – on air musician interviews, performances and video submissions – with a focus on diversity and community representation (check out my “By the way” below for more information on both platforms)
  • Actively involved in ongoing station sponsorships & underwriting, fundraising efforts, community outreach and artist development
  • Received my BA from UC San Diego where I majored in Communications with an emphasis on Culture and Social Force (Media’s influence on social behavior, styles and traditions) and minored in Music History.
