So you’re considering moving to a new city.  Moving can be stressful, but moving out of your town can be especially so.  Here are some things for you to consider before you decide to pull up roots and move across the state or to a new state.

Medical Records

Most of the time, your existing doctor will handle this, but in some cases you’re going to need to grab your records before you move; this can include records from your dentist as well as your family doctor and others.  Make sure to ask them before you move so you don’t find out when you’re hundreds of miles away that you needed to grab them.  Needing to grab your records is rare today, but something worth considering.

State Issued Identification

If you’re moving your home across the state instead of someplace in a new one, then you won’t have to worry about identification issues.  However, if you’re moving to a new state, you are going to need to get new ID cards issued.  Getting new driver licenses is relatively painless in most states, but make sure you know what the requirements are before you move.  If you have a currently valid license you won’t have to take a driver’s test in your new state in most cases; however, in Oregon, a new driving test will be required to get licensed regardless.

Dog Licenses

Most municipalities require your family dog gets licensed.  Getting a dog licensed is reasonably painless most of the time.  It isn’t unheard of that an officer will go door to door to ask if there are any dogs in the house.  Also, proof of vaccination records may be required.

Bank Accounts

If you use a national chain for your banking, then you probably won’t need to worry about getting a new account in your new home town.  However, if you are using a local credit union or bank, then closing your old account before leaving is highly recommended.

Emissions Testing Your Car

The majority of states require smog or emission testing of cars.  If you currently live in a state that doesn’t require testing of your car, this may come as quite the surprise.  State certified technicians will, in most states, need to perform a series of tests to make sure your car is roadworthy.  These include inspection of emission, fuel, and other systems.  Having your vehicle inspected by a competent mechanic before you move could save you some headaches while you’re trying to get settled in your new home.  Some states will require further inspections, so make sure you find the requirements of your new state before you move.

Make Connections Before You Move

If you are a member of a club or you play in a community band in your current locality you can introduce yourself beforehand to ensure you hit the ground running when you’re in your new home.  You can easily find these social groups with a simple internet search.  Having these introductions done before you move can be incredibly stabilizing and comforting.
