- You have an incredibly impressive background, including a PhD in astrophysics. Currently, you’re the Chief Strategy Officer at Innventure and also the company’s co-founder. I’d love to start at the beginning. I know that there’s so much to tell — but could you briefly tell us a bit about your journey from the lab to the boardroom. And give us some insights as to what Innventure does.
- Most people hear the word “startup” and immediately think of Venture Capital, where investors place a lot of small bets hoping one or two hit it big. But Innventure operates completely differently. Tell us about the Innventure model – How are you actually “cracking the code” on commercializing these hidden gems, and what makes your approach to building companies so different from anything else that’s out there?
- I was looking at the Innventure website and I saw that the company’s outlook is that if you get the economics right, the “green” solution often turns out to be the best answer. Can you walk us through how letting a problem define the opportunity—rather than just the novelty of the tech—actually leads to more sustainable outcomes?
- It’s one thing to talk about the model, but the companies you’ve launched are solving some of the biggest physical hurdles we face. These are heavy-duty industrial solutions. Tell us about the companies and the problems they solve.
John Scott, PhD has served as Chief Strategy Officer at Innventure since 2015. Prior to co-founding Innventure, John served as Founder and CEO of XLTG, where he developed the DownSelect method that Innventure uses today to vet disruptive technologies from top MNCs and their associated business opportunities, from 1993 to 2013. John also served as an academic scientist at numerous universities and government labs, including the University of Maryland, the University of North Carolina and the University of Arizona, as well as the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics and Astrophysics from the University of Arizona and has published over 60 academic papers.
