The Distinct Style of Equinox Surfboards

with Owner Jay Sheehan

presented by Shopify

Since 2006, Equinox Surfboards has been offering a full range of surfboards for all abilities and levels of experience. Whether you are brand new to surfing and want to catch your first wave, if you’ve been around for a while and want a lazy day on some mushy waves, or if you are an experienced surfer that wants to carve up some high performance waves, we offer something for everyone.

With shapes ranging from Retro Fish, Mini-Longboards, Funboards, Eggs, and Longboards there is something for all ability levels ranging from the beginner to the high performance riders. We’re located in the surfing capitol of the world, Southern California.

Equinox Surfboards is something we always wanted a surf shop to be … a place where you can check out the most comprehensive collection of cutting-edge and classic inventory, get exactly what you want and get it for a great price. It’s just like walking through an entire warehouse of boards and coming out with the perfect surfboard, except everything gets shipped right to your door!

Our boards are hand shaped by professionals and of the same quality & craftsmanship as the boards you’ll see in local surf shops, but brought to you at a fraction of the price. Our goal is to make sure that every surfer is able to find the perfect board for their ability AND their lifestyle.

Listen to our interview with Owner Jay Sheehan & Host Eric Dye discuss the following:

(1) What separates your company from the other surfboard makers on the market?

(2) How did you get started on ecommerce side of business?

(3) Who are your customers? Tell me about typical demographic.

(4) Why would I purchase a board online versus in a store?

(5) What features of your website do you like the best?

(6) How did you design your website around your customer?

Shopify, a company that is deeply rooted with entrepreneurial spirit, is committed to helping participants along the way by offering world-class marketing and sales tips through a special Build-A-Business website, which will offer knowledge and insight from partners Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk and Tim Ferriss, and sponsors like Google, MailChimp, and PayPal. Shopify has also built out significant prizes for the winners to help their businesses succeed long after the contest:

The winner of last year’s contest – which created nearly 1,400 businesses and generated over $3.5 million in combined revenue – was DODOcase (, a San Francisco company that makes iPad cases using traditional book-binding techniques. The founders, Patrick Buckley and Craig Dalton, are now running a company with projected annual earnings of $4-5 million.

“Our online store looks so good, and works so well that our cases are flying off the shelf,” said Craig. “Without Shopify, there’s no way we would be where we are today. Shopify is our secret weapon.”
