Listen to interview with host Eric Dye & guest Laurie Lane-Zucker discuss the following:
- What prompted you to write this book?
- You led the Orion Society for over a decade and founded one of the early B Corporations. How did that path shape the way you think about business today?
- You coined the term “impact entrepreneur” in 2011. Why was that term needed, and what does it mean?
- How is a regenerative economy different from what people already know as “sustainability” or “ESG”?
- You’re critical of ESG, conscious capitalism, and impact investing as they’re practiced today. What are well-intentioned companies and investors getting wrong?
- What is Defense as a Service™, and why could it change how we think about resilience?
- For a listener who finishes this conversation fired up, what’s the first concrete thing they can do?
Laurie Lane-Zucker is the founder and CEO of Impact Entrepreneur, PBC, a global multimedia publishing platform serving more than 70,000 members across 200+ countries in the impact economy. He coined the term “impact entrepreneur” in 2011 and, in the mid-1990s, working with the educator John Elder at Middlebury College, gave the name “place-based education” to a pedagogy he had spent years building as founding director of The Orion Society (1992–2004), where he worked closely with Wendell Berry, Terry Tempest Williams, Barry Lopez, and David James Duncan. He went on to found one of the earliest Certified B Corporations and the Triad Institute. His new book, The Impact Entrepreneur Breakthrough: A Field Manual for the Regenerative Economy (Berrett-Koehler, September 1, 2026), maps the architecture of an economy that builds value through regeneration rather than extraction.
