Djokovic loses to Daniil Medvedev

Last night, world leading number one Djokovic saw his dreams of winning all majors in one year vanish as he lost yesterday’s Grand Slam final to Daniil Medvedev. This victory would have hugely defined him as world number one, ahead of rivals Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal. It would have been the first man ever to do it since 1969 by Rod Laver.

While Djokovic really was out of the running from the very beginning, in the final set of the game, there was a chance of him retrieving some standing from Medvedev’s 2-set lead. However, it was not achievable, and suddenly the first championship point was all that was needed to end the game. Second seed Medvedev had managed to lose his first ever two Grand Slam finals, however his third one was a success at 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. While many watched from their plasma screens, BetandSkill.com had all the relevant live streaming outlets any punter could ever want. Should you ever wish to place a wager on major tennis matches, you know where to go in the future.

Djokovic saw his dream running away from his grasp in the second completed set in favour of Medvedev, and unfortunately, he made more and more errors that were beyond his characteristics unfortunately. While the crowds tried to roar him on, he became very tearful and overwhelmed at the end. He handled the loss with grace, but of course he was allowed to be upset when victory was not his to take home.

It was not just Djokovic’s errors that allowed his Russian opponent to take away the Grand Slam last night. He played confidently and managed to draw out the error from Djokovic, in addition to having very strong serves to hurry along the sets. He managed to avenge himself hugely from the not so far distant memory of the Australian Open, where Djokovic managed to walk away with that one-again with straight sets.

Medvedev did have a slight wobble in the third set of the game, and this did allow Djokovic to win some leeway back just for a little while, at 5-3 Medvedev pulled himself together and made a third championship point for the win.

Djokovic was a gracious loser and showed full support of his opponent’s win. He thanked all his team, friends and family who had come all the way to New York to watch him reach this pinnacle moment within his career. He also highlighted how a Grand Slam is not the easiest tournament to win, and the loved ones who follow him across the globe in support are one of the many reasons that his journey has proved successful. Towards the end of his speech, he made sure to say how much Medvedev deserved this title, as he worked hugely hard for it, in addition to saying there are many more to win, that he was very certain and confident of.

Third time lucky

It really was a third-time lucky kind of win for Medvedev. Two years ago, we saw an emotional loss in New York, with quite a different story. In addition to this, his first ever Russian Grand Slam final, saw him battling out with the glorious world star Rafa Nadal. Even though it was exhilarating and a huge fight back, he did lose being two sets down.

Medvedev had promised the crowds that he would continue to build up his career in the quest of more sports prizes; and while his pit-stops and second final within Melbourne, was believed to be his second chance from Russia, he was buckled by nerves and unfortunately did break down with errors. Playing against the same opponent in New York, we all saw a different tennis player in complete role reversal. Yesterday he achieved exactly just what he and many were waiting for, two years later against one of the best in the world no doubt. An achievement of his entire career, and the first of many.
