Creating A Video Podcast: Where to Start

Podcasts have a bit of an odd history. The format shot to popularity then steadily declined; now with the advent of streaming services, podcasts are back and stronger than ever before.

For some businesses, having a simple audio-based podcast is enough to keep them going and keep them interacting with their audience, but what if there was a way you could easily repurpose that audio content and use it on different channels?

Why You Should Do Video Podcasts

Video podcasting makes sense, and it doesn’t need to be a particularly difficult task either.

The benefits for your brand, though, are obvious right from the start. While you may have one audience on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, you can reach a whole new audience by uploading a video version to YouTube, Instagram TV, and even Facebook.

Many people listen to podcasts while doing other tasks such as driving or doing the dishes, but there are an equal number of people who like to have the TV on in the background while they’re working or who enjoy watching talks and long-form discussions.

This is where filming your podcast comes into its own, allowing you to upload the same content easily but a filmed version to your platform of choice without much more effort.

Use Video Overlays to Create Moving Images

Don’t fancy being on camera yourself? You don’t even need to! Expanding podcast to video content can be done easily by simply using an image as your background and keeping the audio you’ve already recorded.

Be warned, though, a video-based audience will prefer some kind of moving image. Get creative and use video overlays like a loop of swirling coffee in a coffee mug to give them some kind of visual interest to break it up a bit.

Break the Podcast into Clips for Social

You’d probably prefer for everyone to listen to the entirety of your podcast, but the reality is that sometimes people don’t have time.

So, what are you to do?

Do what every good marketer does and dangle the carrot for them to learn more!

This is the perfect opportunity to use the audience’s short attention span on social media to your advantage.

Grab the audio from your podcast and isolate interesting bits that are under a minute long. Use moving images or even audio spectrum waves over a still image to cut it together into social videos and put on a “listen to the whole podcast at…” call to action on it, and there you go. A perfect social media clip.

If you’re clever, you can get many pieces of content out of one long-form podcast just by splitting it up into smaller pieces for social media.

If you’re even luckier, your social media fans will be happy to share these short clips from your podcast and introduce you to a whole new audience of their friends, thus helping your advocate marketing by utilizing another audience source without you having to lift a finger!
