Room reflections do the heavy lifting. And usually, they are fighting against the singer holding the microphone. Empty rooms with hard surfaces send sound bouncing back into the mic a few milliseconds after it’s spoken. Listeners detect that smear as what gets called “amateurish”.

Don’t let the word “booth” scare you. It doesn’t require an architect, a building permit or a six-figure budget. Some simple acoustic design decisions can turn a spare bedroom into sounding a lot closer to an actual booth than you might think.

Why The Room Beats The Microphone Every Time
A microphone can’t distinguish between a voice and a reflection of that voice. It happily records both.
In an untreated space, the direct sound hits the mic first. The reflections come a tiny bit later — from the desk, from the window, from the ceiling, from the wall behind the chair. If you pile up enough of those reflections you get a boxy, hollow recording that no plugin can completely fix.
Audience members hear it too, even if they can’t identify what is bothering them. One podcast listener survey showed that 51.1% of respondents would expect radio quality audio before subscribing to a new podcast. Audio is the gatekeeper. If the audio doesn’t make it through that first half minute, the content never gets heard.
So what actually separates a professional recording space setup from an amateur one?
Three things:

That’s the whole game. Everything below serves one of those three jobs.
Acoustic Dividers And Where They Belong
It’s the fastest win condition, and is cheaper than nearly everything else.
An acoustic divider is a portable absorbent panel that performs dual functions. It absorbs the reflections traveling back to the microphone and prevents noise from entering from the rest of the room. Dividers are free standing, which means they can be moved for each recording session. Permanent wall panels cannot do this.
Lots of DIYers repurpose acoustic office dividers for this purpose. The high density felt and rock-wool cores used for office acoustic treatment work just as well deadening vocal frequencies inside a vocal booth, and are often much cheaper than equivalent purpose-bought studio acoustic panels.
Placement is where most people go wrong.
Dividers should be placed like this:

Behind the microphone, facing the singer/speaker (kills the biggest reflection of all)

Either side of the recording position, angled inwards to create a loose pocket

Keep at least one-foot distance between the microphone and loudest wall — usually the one that a hallway, road, or busy room is behind

At the rear of the performer (where the space allows) to prevent sound reflecting from the back wall and returning late
Two well placed dividers will defeat six panels nailed to walls indiscriminately. Directionality is more important than numbers.
Sound Treatment That Actually Does Something
Dividers handle the immediate area around the mic. The room itself still needs attention.
Treat The First Reflection Points
First reflection points are where on the walls and ceiling that sound reflects directly just once to reach either the mic or your ears. Everything else in a small room will hurt less than the FRPs.
Locate them using the mirror method: Sit in the listening position and have someone slide a mirror along the wall. Everywhere you can see the speaker in the mirror needs an absorber. Applies to the ceiling as well, directly above your head.
Deal With The Bass
One of the main culprits for why so many home recordings sound muddy is low frequencies. Bass resonates in corners, where two or three surfaces intersect, causing a boomy fog that lays below everything else.
Squares of thin foam will achieve nothing here. Corners require thick and dense absorption — the deeper the panel, the lower the frequency it can treat. Less than approximately ten centimetres is cosmetic, not acoustic treatment.
Break Up The Hard Surfaces
Don’t kill all your reflections. Dampen too much and the space will begin to feel artificially dead. That’s just as amateur as… well… sound that’s artificially dead.
Bookshelves, thick rugs, heavy curtains and full wardrobes all diffuse sound instead of absorbing it. That diffusion is what lends professional rooms their airy, unprocessed feel.
Recording Space Setup Mistakes To Avoid
Here’s something that trips up almost everyone starting out…
Soundproofing is NOT sound treatment. Treatment is controlling how sound behaves in the room. Soundproofing prevents sound from entering or exiting it, and that is accomplished through construction techniques such as mass, sealing, and structural alterations. Purchasing foam and hoping your neighbour’s dog will vanish is destined to fail.
The other common errors:

Recording in the middle of a room, where standing waves are strongest

Facing the mic towards a bare window

Mounting panels far too high to catch anything useful

Ignoring the desk, which reflects sound straight up into the mic
Noise deserves your attention for its own sake. The impacts are quantifiable. A study with 349 workers in 28 offices found acoustic dissatisfaction was more strongly related to lack of speech privacy than to decibel levels. Recordings are affected in the same manner. It is not the background din that kills a take, it’s the intelligible conversations bleeding in.
Keeping Treatment In Working Order
Acoustic treatment isn’t a “fit it and forget it” purchase.
Fabric panels acquire dust which affects their absorption. Inexpensive foam yellows and breaks down. Freestanding dividers get bumped out of place and seldom return to their original location.
A quick routine keeps everything performing:

Vacuum panel surfaces gently every few months

Mark divider positions on the floor with tape so setups repeat exactly

Check mounts and feet for wear

Replace foam once it stops springing back
Clapping your hands every now and then is the easiest test you can do. If you get a ringing tail after your clap then something has changed that needs to be addressed.
Bringing It All Together
The difference between an amateur recording and a professional one is rarely, if ever, an equipment gap. It’s a room gap.
Manage reflections near the mic, provide the bass some place to travel, stop noise before it arrives, and leave enough reflective space for the room to live. Do those four things and even mediocre gear will yield takes that sound intentional instead of happy accidents.
Begin treatment with acoustic dividers. They’re inexpensive, portable and provide the most bang for your buck. Install supplemental fixed treatment at the reflection points after you get the basics going. Maintain it after that.
No one listening will ever know what was installed onto those walls. All they know is that the recording sounded correct.
