Listen to host Eric Dye & guest Maryanne Micchelli Conte discuss the following:
- Congratulations on the publication of your new book, “I Remember Summertime”. I’d love you to tell us how you became an author while continuing with a 40-plus year career in radio sales!
- Was there a specific trigger that made you decide that you were going to take the plunge and make this transition?
- How are things going with this new initiative? We’d love to hear some specific examples or stories since you started in this new direction.
- What challenges have you faced in the journey to becoming a published author, and how have you handled them?
- How did you decide to be published and sold in stores, rather than self-published?
Maryanne Micchelli Conte initially wrote “I Remember Summertime” in the mid-1970s as a teenager, at about the same age as its main character. She had only been to Southern California, the story’s backdrop, once, though she has returned many times to visit family. The book was rediscovered several decades later, and the author remembered how much she loved it…so she tweaked it slightly – and the rest is history!
This is Maryanne’s first novel, published by Rebel Books Press. She describes the book as “Grease” meets “High School Musical” meets “the Brady Bunch” meets “the OC” – with some “Wizard of Oz” and “Wicked” too! Her prior writing experience includes high school and college newspapers and yearbooks, a script for her daughter’s high school fashion show, and numerous work projects. A poem she wrote while in grade school was published in Time Magazine, and early in her long career in radio sales in New York/New Jersey, and nationally, she was featured in an article in Cosmopolitan Magazine on women in media sales. A different poem that prefaces “I Remember Summertime” was one she wrote for the intro to her high school yearbook, well after this book’s completion, and was a totally separate project.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Maryanne has received numerous radio sales awards and has appeared on panels for Rutgers University Career programs, as well as Nutley Women’s History Month. She is a Fellow in the Radio Club of America.
Maryanne resides in her native New Jersey with her husband Andy. They are the proud parents of two daughters, Cara (married to Joe) and Amy (soon-to-be married to Jake) and are loving grandparents of Francesca.
