6 Skills And Traits Every Teacher Should Nurture

After parents, teachers have the most significant impact on the minds and personalities of children. Teachers have the power to build or destroy the future of society. It arguably makes them one of the most important members of any community. They are responsible for imparting knowledge, values, and principles to children. These students then go forward and become responsible citizens of a state.

Children carry what they are taught early on in their lives. That shapes the foundation of their personality and mindset. Therefore, teachers can design the future of society. Hence, a teacher should work on becoming a role model for their students. To do so, the following are the parameters that should be working upon:

  1. Being Approachable

Before any learning occurs, teachers’ responsibility is to make themselves approachable to their students. Particularly at the start of every academic year when a teacher gets a new student batch. A teacher must set her first impression as someone approachable.

If not, students will remain hesitant to address their concerns and problems. Having a warm outlook towards students during every interaction is a great way to seem approachable and friendly. The education sector has turned digital due to the onset of a global pandemic. Given the current circumstances, completing a mat online can be a valuable opportunity to become an educationist. Joining the ranks of qualified teachers has never been easier.

  1. Patience and Stamina

Dealing with younger ones in society is by no means an easy job. Children are full of energy and curiosity. That makes them curious, and their young minds always have unique ideas, which often lead them into trouble. Especially when put together in a school or a classroom setting together, these young minds can wreak havoc if left unsupervised. Therefore, a teacher needs to have mental and physical stamina.

Students will frequently indulge in activities that will test their teacher’s patience and stamina. However, teachers need to ensure that they exercise utmost patience and turn every use of every positive/negative opportunity and convert it into a healthy learning experience.

  1. Inculcate Discipline

Without discipline, it is simply not possible to create a learning environment. Children tend to have small spans of attention and can get distracted by almost anything. It often creates an opportunity for the naughtier ones in a classroom. By creating nuisances, they hope to distract their entire class and become a nuisance for the teacher.

Therefore, teachers should never compromise on classroom discipline. Becoming too soft with students can make you seem vulnerable to classroom miscreants. If a student tries to misbehave, the teacher-in-charge must discipline them through detentions. If students band together in mischief, a severe and stern attitude can also deter them from creating additional trouble.

  1. Preach importance of time management

Time management is a skill that we learned through the early years of schooling. Students require training and repetition to absorb its importance fully. It is a skill that requires work and intensive training. Therefore, teachers have to lead by example if they are to preach the importance of time management.

Being on time, adhering to deadlines, setting punishments for those who dishonor deadlines, and adhering to schedules is essential. Time management is a skill that takes time to master. It requires months, often years of patience and consistency to inculcate the value of time amongst children.

  1. Build Leaders

The duty of developing and nurturing future leaders is in the hands of teachers. While some people are natural-born leaders, it is teachers’ job to ensure that all students are confident and taught to become future leaders. And to do so, teachers themselves have to practice leadership in the classroom.

Students tend to mimic their teachers either consciously or unconsciously. Therefore, a teacher must lead by example. To do so, they have to practice what they preach, abide by the rules. They should reward positive behavior, punish negative behavior, maintain impartiality amongst all students, and actively seek and help struggling ones.

  1. Encourage Creativity

Human minds are incredibly creative and imaginative, especially during the early years of childhood. Teachers who nourish their students’ innovative and creative sides can often leave lasting and positive impacts on their minds. Sometimes the creative side of a child’s brain is often utilized in creating mischief.

However, it is the responsibility of teachers to channelize their creative energy into something positive. Creative activities such as art, music, dance, and cinema are great platforms to encourage healthy creativity in children at an early age.

Final Words

Teaching is one of the noblest professions that exist. Teachers have the opportunity to mold and shape the lives of future generations. Teachers have a more significant impact on the overall outlook of society than any other professional role. Without the engagement of great teachers, it is impossible to develop an open, equitable, and fair society.
