When I was a kid most people considered me a natural born athlete. I played soccer, rode dirt bikes, played football, and baseball. You name it, I played it. I was competitive and driven, but I valued being a strong team player. Even at a young age having a sense of community was very important to me.
On a cold winter afternoon my perception of what that really meant changed forever. I began walking home from practice, and as I crossed the tracks that lead to my house I heard a faint noise that sounded like a whimper off in the distance. It was getting dark quickly, and my dad always told me not the cross the tracks at night. I decided to ignore the noise, but as I walked away something pulled me back. I turned around, and decided to walk down the tracks a bit. I walked close to 200 feet down the tracks, and saw a little brown kitten who began to cry as I approached. I got a better look as I knelt down, and realized its paw was caught slightly in the tracks. I suddenly remembered one summer helping my Uncle Lauren who was a Vet in New Mexico help a rabbit escape the clutches of a train track. I quickly got up and ran to find a decent sized stick, and when I found one I ran back to the helpless little kitten. I wedged the stick in between the track, and it opened just slightly and I was able to gently lift the kitten free. I bundled the kitten up, and ran home as fast as I could! My parents took me to the veterinarians office where they set his broken leg. They told me he would have died if I hadn’t freed him when I did. I kept that little kitten, nursed him back to health, and named him Icarus.
Icarus inspired me to be a voice for those who don’t have one. I spent the next 10 years of my life rescuing cats and dogs and helping them find loving homes. As I got older I started a family of my own, and my rescue missions became few and far between. A full time job, weekend sports activities, and dozens of birthday parties kept me from pursuing my dream. After years of trying to get back to the passion I once had for rescuing animals I finally found a new beginning. I found a way to continue on with my passion for helping our Furry Friends, and support my family. Maak 4 Pets paved that road.
