We could open this bio with a list of professional accomplishments but instead we’ll get straight to the facts – Tara rides a motorcycle, once owned a scrunchie business (vintage chic), will beat you at Texas Hold ‘em, and can carve wood with her bare hands. OK, maybe not with bare hands… but she can make and do just about anything.

Tara met Dave Roper & Will Miller, the owners of Crumpler, in 2003. She agreed to help them set up their US business and has been busy building the company ever since. Tara has personally overseen the design, installation, and opening of multiple retail locations, a shipping warehouse, and a US headquarters office (a.k.a. ping pong central which, by the way, she will also beat you at). Because small companies call for jack-of-all-trade types, Tara was also responsible for organizing some of the company’s most successful marketing campaigns to date, including the biggest Beer for Bags swap this side of the Australian Outback. Yeah, that’s what it sounds like. I know…snore- enough about work.

In the midst of all this, she’s found the time to consult on various start ups, bicycle 550 miles from San Francisco to LA, ride her 1972 Honda 350 CL across the Nevada desert, and surf the infamous Rockaways. She took some much needed time off during the summer of 2010 only to work (what else is new?) with old pal Julian Casablancas on his tour through Europe. Don’t even ask. No wait, do! That’s what we’re here for. Tara doesn’t look for rest, she looks for inspiration. Tired yet? She’s not.

Tara has a BA in Computer Science and Economics from NYU and previously worked as a tech consultant for international corporate law firm, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. She has travelled to South America, Australia, France (just ducked in to do part of the Tour De France 2003, no biggie) and back again. In her spare time, she might be found sailing, figure skating, playing the flute, welding, and has most recently been seen throwing knives.  Don’t feel like a lesser human being. Remember the scrunchie business? We’re not all perfect.

Listen to the interview as host Eric Dye and guest Tara Martins discuss the following:

  • Currently you’re the General Manager of Crumpler US; what other positions did you hold before and what did you learn along the way to help you to get where you are now?
  • Are there any things you do consistently in business that work for you?
  • What excites you most about what you do?
  • You’ve been working with Crumpler for quite some time, what has kept you with them for so long? What ambitions do you still have for Crumpler as well for yourself personally?
  • How do you balance work and personal life?  Do you find the two compliment each other?
  • What has your greatest personal accomplishment been in the last 12 months?
